Kansas City police have confirmed that a man found wandering late Sunday night has been safely reunited with his family. The individual—believed to be in his early 60s—was discovered around 10 p.m. near 72nd and North Wyandotte streets. He had no identification on him, was barefoot, and appeared to be nonverbal, raising immediate concerns for his safety and wellbeing.
When authorities first located him, he was wearing a maroon hoodie, red shirt, and blue-gray sweatpants. With no way to verbally communicate or share contact information, police issued a public call for assistance in identifying him. Thanks to help from the community, his family was located and confirmed his identity. Thankfully, he is now back home and safe.
A Closer Look at Vulnerable Individuals with Communication Challenges
This case highlights a reality many families in our community face: how to ensure the safety of loved ones with communication barriers. Whether due to autism, cognitive disabilities, or aging-related conditions, nonverbal individuals are especially at risk when separated from caregivers—even briefly.
For families of individuals with autism, incidents like this are far too familiar. Wandering, also known as elopement, is a common behavior in individuals on the autism spectrum. When communication is limited or nonverbal, these situations can become emergencies very quickly. That’s why it’s critical to have a safety plan, support network, and the right therapies in place.
